Glen Iris - Brick Home Extension

This project transforms a typical red brick home design into an expansive, renewed suburban retreat with generous living and entertaining spaces. Light and bright throughout, the new addition features a second storey contemporary extension with first-floor home office, master bedroom, walk in robes and high-level slot clerestory windows. On the ground floor, a new open plan living and kitchen with unique cathedral ceiling open out onto an outdoor patio overlooking the garden. The internal finishes adopt exposed and recycled timbers to add warmth and character, with the original bricks salvaged from the demolition stage employed as a unique kitchen splashback.

Our design showcases the home owner’s Austrian heritage and their plumbing expertise through the cleverly hidden drainage in the inventive roof form. Externally, the addition aligns with the existing roof angles from the street. The home architectural steel design twists into an angular and contemporary moulded steel form at the rear.

A 6.2 star energy rating has been achieved for the home, a rare achievement for an older brick veneer home with a new addition. The whole home is now cooler in summer, warmer in winter, and more comfortable year round.
